The vast majority of Suffolk County traffic tickets issued within the five western towns of Long Island, including cell phone tickets, moving violations (such as unsafe lane change), and speeding, are handled by the Suffolk County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency (“SCTPVA”).  The SCTPVA is located at 100 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge.

Where a traffic ticket is issued in an incorporated village or a town on the east-end of Long Island, the ticket will be handled by town and village justice courts.

More serious charges, including misdemeanor and DWI or DUI charges which occur within Huntington, Babylon, Islip, Smithtown, or Brookhaven, will be heard at the Suffolk County First District Court located at 400 Carleton Avenue in Central Islip.  Generally speaking, when a traffic violation occurs during the same traffic stop as a misdemeanor or DWI/DUI charge, all of the tickets will be heard together at the Suffolk County First District Court.

Will my traffic ticket result in a suspension?

One of the most frequent concerns for our clients is whether a traffic ticket will result in a license suspense.  The New York State Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) generally utilizes a point system in determining whether a driver’s license will be suspended.  Although there are other ways to lose your license, the points system is the most frequently experienced suspension method for many drivers.

A New York State Driver’s License will be suspended after suffering eleven or more points within an eighteen (18) month time period.  The eighteen (18) month period utilized by the DMV counts from the date of violation and not the date of conviction. The point accrual date is an important factor as the DMV will not add points to your license until you are convicted or plead guilty. Depending on the severity of your traffic violation, a suspension may result with even one ticket.  Below is a chart displaying the number of points a driver will receive for speeding violations.
